Testing is an important aspect of validating renewable ocean energy technology. GRS is combining the expertise from Ireland’s Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre (HMRC) with Portugal’s Wave Energy Centre to correlate numerical testing results with the physical tank results.

The Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre (HMRC) is a centre of excellence based in Cork. Specialising in ocean renewable energy and coastal engineering, the centre provides support to the maritime industry, as well as fundamental research, development and infrastructure for providers of ocean energy solutions.

HMRC houses the only facilities for wave simulation in the Republic of Ireland, with a cutting-edge wave flume and ocean wave basin. The highly-acclaimed centre is responsible for producing a development and evaluation protocol standard that has been adopted as part of Ireland’s Ocean Energy Strategy, which is the standard to which all devices are tested. In addition, HMRC has expertise in instrumentation and data acquisition at various scales from tank testing through to full-scale deployment.

Other support resources include independent advice and support to developers through model testing, concept design, computer modelling, design performance validation, resource assessments and offshore data recording.

Numerical Modelling Testing
The numerical modelling group has been essential in the testing of GRS's development in order to predict its dynamic behaviour and, in the case of WECs, the capacity to absorb wave energy. The numerical modelling has been carried out by in-house developed software of WaveCs.
